A good server for both Majesties: the patronage of Juan José Fernández Campero de Herrera (active between 1680 and 1718)

This talk explores the patronage of Juan José Fernández Campero de Herrera in the Audiencia de Charcas in relation with the circulation of knowledge and material culture of the period. The narrative of his ecclesiastical patronage - founded in a court case - is intricately woven with the concept of good governance of his encomienda and Marquisate of the Valle de Tojo. This analysis unveils how his patronage activities played an integral part in fulfilling social obligations and constructing forms of prestige.

The examination of the visual program of the Viceparish of Yavi leads us to highlight paintings one could easily find in European churches, such as copies of Rubens models and Flemish paintings. As well as the presence of novelty paintings and local devotions recently produced in the Viceroyalty of Peru, such as the Virgin of Callao and Military Angels. A distinctive aspect of Fernández Campero's patronage is the immediacy with which he acquired locally produced paintings spread since the end of the 17th century. Finally, his scholarly profile can be seen through his library, which specializes in religious, legal, historical and literary subjects, where recently published and locally produced writings also stand out.
