Fellows and Supporters

The association of the Friends of the Institute, (Freunde des Frankfurter Max-Planck-Instituts für europäische Rechtsgeschichte e.V.), is dedicated to the intellectual and material promotion of research at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory (mpilhlt).

The association aims to bring current research in the field of European legal history to a wider audience and is keen to invite both interested parties from other academic disciplines and the general public to acquaint themselves with the work done at the Institute. To this end, the association offers presentations on the principal projects and research areas being explored by the researchers at the mpilhlt.

The association also seeks to strengthen the position of the humanities in general, which lack a powerful lobby of their own, both in the eyes of the public and in the scientific sphere. The perhaps less prominent, not immediately ‘useful’ disciplines such as legal history are in particular need of such support. The association draws attention to the significance of this work for both individuals and society at large.

The association is keen to recruit additional friends of legal history. An invitation to join the association is extended to legal historians and historians in general, legal practitioners and members of the general public with an interest in history, representatives of other disciplines with an interest in culture, and those who love books. A special invitation is extended to students who would like to know how the law came to be, why it is what it is and what part it plays in the organisation of state and society. Welcome too are all those who have enjoyed or continue to enjoy being part of the mpilhlt as a productive and exciting European centre for the history of law.

The association offers:

  • Information on the current state of research into European legal history in all its facets
  • Information on the latest publications of the mpilhlt and its researchers
  • Use of the library
  • Invitations to lectures and talks at the mpilhlt
  • Dialogue and discussion between researchers and the public
  • Intellectual exchange: the annual meeting, which includes a topical presentation by a member of the Institute followed by a reception, provides an ideal opportunity to meet and converse with like-minded individuals.

We cordially invite you to join the Freunde des Frankfurter Max-Planck-Instituts für europäische Rechtsgeschichte e.V.

The annual membership fee is € 36 for individuals (students € 18) and € 100 for corporate members.
