Former Journals

American Journal of Legal History (AJLH)
The American Journal of Legal History (AJLH) was founded in 1957 and was the first English-language periodical in the field. When it was relaunched as an Oxford University Press (OUP) journal in early 2016, Stefan Vogenauer (mpilhlt) was appointed as a co-editor together with Al Brophy (University of North Carolina School of Law, Chapel Hill; later University of Alabama School of Law). In 2019, Al handed over to Felice Batlan (IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in Chicago). The comprehensive relaunch also involved a major reorientation of the journal. While retaining its traditional focus on the legal history of the United States, it now aimed to reflect the recent enormous broadening of the intellectual horizon of the discipline and include a substantial number of contributions of a comparative, international or transnational nature. Since 2021, the editorial process is dealt with in-house by OUP with new editors and editorial team. more
Ius Commune (1967-2001)
Founded in 1967 by the then director of the MPIeR, Helmut Coing, as an annual Institute journal, Ius Commune. Veröffentlichungen des Max-Planck-Instituts für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte developed into an internationally renowned journal of legal history over the nearly 30 years of its existence. In addition to research articles, shorter contributions (Berichte and Mitteilungen, later Berichte and Kritik) and, from volume 14 onwards, notices and reviews were published. Until 2001, 28 volumes were published by Klostermann Verlag. All issues of the journal are available online in PDF format (except for the review sections) via the mpilhlt Digital Library. The copyright for subsequent use (reproduction or distribution) of the digitised material lies with the mpilhlt and Klostermann Verlag. more
Rechtshistorisches Journal (1982-2001)
The Rechtshistorische Journal was published between 1982 and 2001 by Löwenklau Gesellschaft e.V., Frankfurt am Main. In contrast to Ius Commune, RJ was not an institute journal. All twenty volumes were under the general direction of Dieter Simon, the Institute’s Director at the time, and edited by Marie Theres Fögen and Rainer Maria Kiesow. The tables of contents of all published issues can be found on our homepage. All rights to the journal and its contents are held by Löwenklau Gesellschaft e.V. more
