Workshop RISE-mpilhlt: Direitos e resistências nos Mundos Ibéricos

Since 2017, the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory is part of the project "RESISTANCE: Rebellion and Resistance in the Iberian Empires, 16th-19th centuries", funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (778076-H2020-MSCA-RISE-2017). Over the last years, the project promoted fruitful cooperation between researchers from different institutions with the aim at understanding the complexity of processes of resistance. The workshop "Direitos e resistências nos Mundos Ibéricos" seeks to present some results of these cooperations with a particular focus on the use of law and norms as strategies of resistance. Speakers will focus on the regions that were geographically part of the Portuguese Empire at some point during their history. The papers will address how enslaved people, women, and peasants used law and courts to resist oppression and claim for rights and better life conditions.
