ERC Consolidator grant for Manuel Bastias Saavedra

December 09, 2020

Manuel Bastias Saavedra has been awarded 1.9 Mio euros for his research project IberLAND – Beyond property: law and land in the Iberian world, 1510–1850.

The search for a maritime route to Asia in the late 15th century resulted in the Iberian crowns of Portugal and Castile, in little over a century, connecting diverse peoples and communities across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. In doing so, they transformed the questions surrounding the ownership and use of land into issues of global dimensions. IberLAND explores the history of land tenure in a long-term and global perspective by focusing on the territories of the former Portuguese and Spanish empires in what has recently been labelled the Iberian World.

Manuel Bastias Saavedra is a Researcher in the Department Historical Regimes of Normativity and project coordinator of the joint project Glocalising Normativities –  A Global Legal History (15th- 21st century). He joined the Institute in late 2018 after a two-year fellowship funded by the Humboldt Foundation.

The European Research Council’s Consolidator Grants are part of the EU’s current Research and Innovation Programme, Horizon 2020. This year the ERC received 2506 applications of which about 13% will be funded.
