Book presentation on global legal history in China

November 21, 2019

In the course of the conference ‘Using History in Law, organised by Thomas Duve und LI Fupeng at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), a book presentation took place for Thomas Duve’s book  托马斯•杜斐:《全球法律史导论》,李富鹏等译,高仰光校,“全球法律史丛书”第一册,商务印书馆2019年版 (An Introduction To Global Legal History, translated by Li Fupeng et al., Chinese Series of Global Legal History 1, Beijing: Commercial Press, 2019). In this work, Duve provides an historical overview of the development of legal history writing in the Germanophone tradition and an introduction to the conceptual foundations and historical context of the development of a ‘European legal history’. This provides the basis for his examination of the emerging field of global legal history. The book’s Chinese edition was coordinated by LI Fupeng.

The book is the first volume in the new series Chinese Series of Global Legal History published by Commercial Press, a well-known publishing house established in Shanghai in 1897. The series is edited by Thomas Duve and LI Fupeng. Three members of its academic advisory board – Professor ZHANG Sheng (CASS, Beijing), Chairman of the Chinese Association for Legal History, Professor LIANG Zhiping (CNA, Beijing), and Professor QIU Pengsheng (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) – also took part in the conference. The conference’s presentations and discussions focused on the question in what way traditions and findings from legal history are used in juridical argumentation in China.
