The abolition of the slave trade is often represented as a turning point in international law but may be better understood as a facet of imperial legal consolidation and a product of inter-imperial law. The talk considers how legal approaches to slave ship captures resulted directly and indirectly in calls for greater control over subordinate jurisdictions in the British empire.
