Guest Workshop: Derecho e Historia en Latinoamérica

The workshop on May 14th is the second in this year’s series of guest workshops at the MPIeR. They provide an opportunity for visiting researchers, who are at the Institute for only a limited period of time, to network with other investigators and to receive feedback on their current work. The invited scholars will address questions and issues of their own research projects that have a particular connection to the Institute’s research. This workshop is related to the research field of The Legal History of Ibero-America and will cover legal historical topics in different regions and periods.

The first presentation analyses how engravings and maps depicting America during the initial years of the Spanish conquest are intertwined with colonial juridical forms and more specifically with the corpus iuris regarding cannibal Indians; moreover, it goes on to argue that the production of certain images at that time was aimed at grounding the Iberian jurisdiction over the ‘New World’.

The second proposal investigates within the context of ‘Derecho Indiano’ the ‘servidumbre indígena’ as a field in which two relevant aspects converge: on the one hand, the localization of law and, on the other, the “potestad oeconomica”.

Within the context of the first phase of ‘peronismo’, the final exposition takes up a social and historical perspective to explore the conformation, development and implementation of the Supreme Council of police-national justice in the national territories of Argentina.

Each presentation will be commented on by a fellow researcher here at the Institute:
