Helen McKee, previously at Newcastle University, is investigating the history of land ownership in Jamaica from emancipation to independence. In particular, she is exploring the legal spaces between laws and policies of the colonial government on the one hand, and Afro-Caribbean influences on and reactions to those laws on the other. Bringing together traditional archival work, oral history, and interpretation of Afro-Caribbean produced cultural material, her project will contribute to a fuller understanding of how law was used and interpreted in the post-emancipation Caribbean.
