The eleventh volume of the repertory of edicts covers laws of good order in the four prince-bishoprics (Hochstifte) of Augsburg, Münster, Speyer and Würzburg from the late Middle Ages through early modernity. The nearly 6000 edicts it contains (Augsburg 1353, Münster 993, Speyer 1855 und Würzburg 1788) demonstrate that even medium-sized Imperial Estates run by the clergy regulated actively to achieve ‘good order and rule’. This repertory provides access to a further historical source for clerical territories of the old empire, which have recently inspired intense research. Moreover, the edicts provide rich opportunities to compare the edicts and social, economic, cultural and administrative laws of these territories with those of premodern territories and states outside the clergy. Therefore, this volume provides not only rich normative material for general histories of law and society, but a point of departure for comparative research on order, security, conflict management and state activities in premodernity as well.
