The correspondence between the legal historians Wilhelm Arnold (1826-1883) and Andreas Heusler (1834-1921), edited by Karl Kroeschell and Dorothee Mußgnug, began in 1858 when the two were employed in Basel. Upon Arnold accepting a chair at his alma mater in Marburg, Heusler assumed the newly vacant chair in 1863. In their correspondence, which continued until Arnold’s sudden death, the two inform each other about more than the institutional problems at their two small faculties. They also treat problems of the contemporary politics of Basel, Hesse and the empire as well as ecclesiastical politics. The friendship between the two families permeated all the letters, with its final manifestation in Heusler’s completion of the second edition of his friend’s ‘German History, Franconian Times’ (Deutsche Geschichte. Fränkische Zeit) after Arnold’s death.
