Conference: „Alles falsch!“ Comments on Wolfram Brandes - cancelled

For many years now, Wolfram Brandes has been one of the most influential scholars working on the history of the Eastern Roman Empire, both in German-speaking academic circles and beyond. A meticulous and opinionated historian, his work spans a broad range of topics and source materials: from late antiquity to modernity, from Asia Minor to Scandinavia, from Byzantine administrative history to editorial and palaeographic groundwork, to conceptions of the Endtime and the history of science in his field. In addition to his extensive and varied oeuvre and his wide-ranging connections, he is distinguished by his commitment to his subject, Byzantine Studies, which is also visible in his participation in numerous committees and through his intensive editorial work. The basis of these activities has been his work as part of the 'Byzantine Legal Sources Research Center' (Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities) for almost 30 years, which he also heads up.

Held on the occasion of his 65th birthday, this conference honours Wolfram Brandes and his scholarship. Academic companions and friends as well as students will give lectures in which they respond to four of Wolfram Brandes' research foci: eschatology, city history, East-West cultural contacts and administrative history. The diversity of Wolfram Brandes' scientific interests and personal connections is reflected in the lecturers who come from different countries and different disciplines.
