Colloquium: Anthropology of Law and Legal Pluralism

  • Date: Nov 5, 2019
  • Time: 14:15 - 16:30
  • Organisation: Armando Guevara-Gil
  • Location: MPIeR
  • Room: Lecture hall of the MPI

In this colloquium, I will present the main definitions that the legal pluralistic perspective (within the broader context of the anthropology of law) has developed when approaching its subjects of inquiry in different geographical and cultural contexts. I also provide some basic references to the methodology applied in the anthropological study of Law. With these in mind, I invite the participants to engage in a dialogue about the differences and similarities between the History and Anthropology of Law. This is a useful exercise because while both disciplines study human societies from different perspectives, they nevertheless share the view about the possibility of crafting sensible patterns and comparisons, irrespective of time, space and historical-cultural diversity.
