Rolf Lieberwirth has passed away (1.12.1920 - 5.4.2019)

April 11, 2019

On 5 April 2019, the legal historian Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Rolf Lieberwirth died in Halle/ Saale. Almost 99 years of age, he was a remarkable personality of contemporary and especially legal history. As a student of the learned legal historian Gertrud Schubart-Fikentscher, who maintained her integrity during the two 'German dictatorships', he grew into the research she was carrying out, including the work on the Enlightenment thinker Christian Thomasius from Halle. As her assistant and successor, not to mention politically independent, he kept legal history alive at the University of Halle-Wittenberg under very difficult circumstances, played a leading role in the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities, habilitated Heiner Lück and Bernd Schildt, and wrote in 2008 a history of the law faculty in the GDR. In 1995, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen. He was a model of consistency, humanity and kindness, and cultivated close ties with members of the Institute. He will be laid to rest in the Gertrauden cemetery in Halle on 12 April 2019. (M. St.)
