Call for Applications: Reading Course on Alonso de la Vera Cruz’ Relectio De dominio infidelium et iusto bello

The project "The School of Salamanca" invites applications for its second interdisciplinary Reading Course (10-12 April 2019). The Course will read and discuss passages of Alonso de la Vera Cruz' Relectio de dominio infidelium et iusto bello, a text that the author had written for the inauguration of the University of Mexico (1553). The text took up the discussion about just and unjust titles of Spanish rule in the Americas, but also critically examined the social dimension of the relations between the indigenous population and Spanish settlers (encomenderos). The Reading Course is aimed at advanced students, PhD students and post-docs. The deadline for applications has been extended to 17 March 2019.
