Paralleling previous volumes on legal training and jurisprudence (Studien zur europäischen Rechtsgeschichte 225 and 248), these detailed analyses of judicature similarly allow comparisons of transfer processes in the course of the eastward expansion of western law in countries displaying very different legal cultures. The authors have penetrated deeply into the legal practice of courts in Russia, Poland, Hungary (with Croatia) and Romania to reveal the effects of the encounter between western legislative models and local legal traditions. Interpreting the history of the ‘East’ in light of western points of reference, the eastern European authors find a unique approach to the historicity of a European ensemble.
