From Europe but beyond Europe: The Circulation of Rudolf von Jhering's Ideas in East Asia and Latin America - new paper on SSRN

November 10, 2016

From Europe but beyond Europe: The Circulation of Rudolf von Jhering's Ideas in East Asia and Latin America by Luis Lloredo Alix has recently been published in our SSRN Research Paper Series.

The aim of this article is to analyze the circulation of Rudolf von Jhering's ideas outside of Europe. More precisely, we will show how his thought was introduced in Japan and China, as well as in some Latin American countries: Especially Brazil, but also Chile, Argentina, Peru and Mexico. Before accomplishing this task we will make a draft on the major interpretations that Jhering's thought received within Europe, in order to identify the main hermeneutic orientations that have been proposed to apprehend his work. The methodological standpoint of this contribution states that the phenomenon of cultural translation does not imply a mechanical and passive reception of works or authors. Instead, the circulation of ideas usually leads to processes of transformation and hybridation of the original theories.
