Graduate programs at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History
The Institute is widely committed to supporting graduate students. We have our own scholarship program for Ph.D. students from Germany and abroad and are involved in two International Max Planck Research Schools and the European "Marie Curie" sponsorship program which is run jointly with the EHESS in Paris, the Instituto Italiano di Scienze Umane in Florence and the London School of Economics.
A Max Planck Research Group devoted to “Age and law” is established at the Institute and various legal history dissertation projects are supported through our participation in the excellence cluster. Since 1997 the Institute has held a "European legal history summer school" which has developed into one of the principal networking instruments for junior scientists working in this field. For several years the Institute has also organized a study week devoted to "medieval sources in present-day legal history" which attracts participants from Germany and abroad. The "Young Legal Historians Forum" originally initiated in Frankfurt now boasts an international membership and was held in Pécs in 2008 and Florence in 2009 before returning to Frankfurt in 2010. In the course of developing the special research field devoted to the “Legal history of Latin America” an Argentinean-Brazilian-German graduate school is being established as well as a regular seminar on the legal history of Ibero-America.
