JEV-Stipendium für europäische Verwaltungsgeschichte
Bewerbungsschluss: 30. September 2013
Prof. Dr. Erk Volkmar Heyen, bis zu seiner Emeritierung Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Öffentliches Recht und europäische Verwaltungsgeschichte an der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald und Herausgeber des 1989-2008 erschienenen „Jahrbuchs für europäische Verwaltungsgeschichte“ (JEV), hat ein Forschungsstipendium auf dem Gebiet der europäischen Verwaltungsgeschichte gestiftet („JEV-Stipendium für europäische Verwaltungsgeschichte“). Die für den Stipendienvorschlag zuständige Jury hat ihren Sitz am MPI für europäische Rechtsgeschichte. Das MPI eröffnet den Stipendiaten Arbeitsmöglichkeiten in seiner Bibliothek und sorgt für die Veröffentlichung des geförderten Buches in einer seiner Schriftenreihen.

Invitación a participar en la constitución del grupo de discusión "El individuo como protagonista de la construcción del horizonte normativo entre Viejo y Nuevo Mundo (siglos XV-XVIII)" organizado conjuntamente por el Max-Planck Institut für europäische Rechtsgeschichte y por el FBK-Istituto Storico Italo-Germanico de Trento. El grupo será integrado por investigadores procedentes de diferentes países y expertos en distintas disciplinas que quieran intercambiar perspectivas de investigación, experiencias e información sobre el tema propuesto.

CfP: International Max Planck Research School ‘Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment’ Conference ‘On Mediation’ 4th – 8th February, 2014

The second conference of the International Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment will be held between the 4th and 8th of February 2014 at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History and will focus on the concept of mediation. Following the basic design of REMEP the leading approach of the conference is to explore the variety of concepts, modes and manifestations of mediation in current as well as in historical settings regarding the interdependences and interrelations with the concepts of retaliation and punishment. Speakers will be invited on the basis of submitted abstracts (1,000 characters max.) to be sent to Karl Härter (

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the publication of the book “Law and Revolution” by Harold J. Berman, we would like to take the opportunity to look back on the history of the creation and reception of this important, highly praised, but also criticized and controversial, yet undoubtedly highly influential – especially outside Europe –, work in this year’s "Forum" of our journal "Rechtsgeschichte – Legal History" no. 21 (2013).
The editorial team of Rg invites you to take part in this year’s ‘Forum’ with a short and forthright essay – in accordance with the debating-tradition of the journal –written in the language of your choice.

Im diesjährigen 'Forum' der Zeitschrift Rechtsgeschichte - Legal History 21 (2013) möchten wir den 30sten Jahrestages der Publikation des Buchs 'Law and Revolution' von Harold J. Berman zum Anlass nehmen, auf die Entstehungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte dieses wichtigen, viel gelobten, auch kritisierten und umstrittenen, zweifellos aber nicht zuletzt außerhalb Europas besonders einflussreichen Werks zurückzublicken.
Die Redaktion der Rg lädt dazu ein, sich an diesem 'Forum' zu beteiligen - mit einem kurzen, der Tradition der Rechtsgeschichte - Legal History entsprechend gerne auch meinungsstarken Beitrag, in einer von Ihnen selbst bestimmten Sprache.

Robert Feenstra is dead

On the evening of Saturday 2nd March 2013, Robert Feenstra, doyen of Dutch and European legal historians, died at the age of ninety-two years. Until his last days he was still working at his desk, the immaculate accuracy and eye for detail for which his scholarship was celebrated remaining undiminished to the end. The world of legal history has lost an irreplaceable thesaurus of knowledge which spanned the whole spectrum of legal history from ancient Roman law to the European jurists of the Modern Period. But the fruits of a lifetime's pursuit of knowledge will be preserved for future generations of scholars in the extensive and meticulous notes which accompany the books and articles of which he was so prolific.

Special theme 2013: Global Perspectives on Legal History

The Max-Planck Summer Academy for Legal History, offered by the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (MPIeR), provides an in-depth introduction to methods and principles of research in legal history. Although its main focus is on European legal history, there is special emphasis on global perspectives on legal history. It addresses a selected group on highly motivated early-stage researchers, usually PhD candidates, working on a research project with an interest in the basic research of historical formation and transformations of law and other normative orders.
The Summer Academy for Legal History 2013 will be held from July 29 to August 16, 2013 and is dedicated to the special theme Global Perspectives on Legal History

Walter-Kolb-Gedächtnispreis an Dr. Thiago Reis e Souza verliehen

Dr. Thiago Reis e Souza wurde am 15. Februar 2013 bei einem Festakt im Römer der Walter-Kolb-Gedächtnispreis der Stadt Frankfurt am Main verliehen. Ausgezeichnet wurde er für seine Dissertation „Savignys Theorie der juristischen Tatsachen“, mit der er am Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft der Universität Frankfurt am Main promoviert wurde. In einer ersten Laudatio zeigte sich Kulturdezernent Prof. Dr. Felix Semmelroth erfreut über die Auszeichnung einer Arbeit, die Verbindungen zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Frankfurt aufweist und zudem von höchster stilistischer Qualität sei. Prof. Dr. Cornelius Prittwitz schloss sich dem als Vertreter der Universität Frankfurt am Main an und wünschte Dr. Reis e Souza eine erfolgreiche Fortsetzung seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn. Vom Doktorvater des Geehrten, Professor Dr. Joachim Rückert, wurde die grundlegende Bedeutung der Arbeit hervorgehoben, die Friedrich Carl von Savigny dem Publikum näher bringt, als Gestalter der Regeln einer Gesellschaft in Freiheit und Gleichheit. Abgerundet wurde die Veranstaltung von einer persönlichen Dankesrede von Dr. Reis e Souza, der die bereichernden Erfahrungen im Doktorandenseminar von Prof. Rückert würdigte und überdies betonte, dass im Laufe seiner fruchtbaren Arbeit in Frankfurt diese Stadt, mit der Goethe-Universität und dem Max-Planck-Institut für europäische Rechtsgeschichte, zu seiner zweiten Heimat geworden sei.
Call for Papers: Panel “Relics, altars and other sacred things in the juridical construction of religious spaces in Ibero-America (XV-XVII centuries)” Lisboa, 17.-20.07.2013

The Centre for Overseas History (CHAM) in Lisboa dedicates its 2013 Conference to the subject "Colonial (Mis)understandings. Portugal and Europe in Global Perspective, 1450-1900". Panel 21, proposed by researchers of the MPIeR, will deal with "Relics, altars and other sacred things in the juridical construction of religious spaces in Ibero-America (XV-XVII centuries)": Between the 15th and 17th centuries, new Christian communities were constituted in the new discovered lands. This panel wants to analyze the juridical tools, practices and norms developed in order to set up sacred spaces for Catholic worship and missionary activities.

Dr. Wim Decock erhält den Raymond Derine Preis

Dr. Wim Decock, Nachwuchsgruppenleiter am Max-Planck-Institut für europäische Rechtsgeschichte (LOEWE Schwerpunkt gerichtlichte und auβergerichtliche Konfliktlösung) und Gastprofessor an der KU Leuven, wurde auf der Weihnachtsfeier der Universität Leuven der Raymond Derine Preis 2012 durch den Rektor, Prof. Dr. Mark Waer, verliehen. Der Raymond Derine Preis ist nach dem flämischen Juraprofessor und Politiker Raymond Derine (1926-1987) benannt und zeichnet zweijährlich hervorragende Forschungsarbeiten zum Thema “Gerechtigkeit” aus. Herr Decock erhielt den mit 2500,- € dotierten Preis für seine Dissertationsschrift “Theologians and Contract Law: The Moral Transformation of the Ius Commune”, der zum Jahresbeginn in der “Brill Studies in the History of Private Law”-Reihe veröffentlicht wurde.
