Presentation of the LexisNexis Databases

August 02, 2017

On 19 July 2017, a presentation was held on the database Lexis and Nexis here at the MPIeR, and the event was financed by the MPS. The event began with a short explanation as to what exactly the database includes.

Nexis stands for “news information” and contains full-text documents in the areas of news, law and economy. Full-text documents are available from thousands of international journals, magazines and newspapers (both current and past issues), covering everything from Afghanistan to Cyprus (e.g. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Independent, El País, Le Monde, etc.).

In order to make searching the database easier and to ensure more precise results, various operators can be used, which were demonstrated at the event. Explanations of the operators and their application are available in the database under the information function. Furthermore, by means of the various tabs, e.g. “law”, a direct search in the respective relevant sources is possible. One can, for example, select whether a search should be conducted using English, Asian or European legal sources.

The database Lexis only includes “legal information”. Lexis was started back in the 1970s as information service for legal scholarship; the database has profited from decades of experience. Lexis focuses on U.S. law and jurisprudence.
